Our Ethos

Life at Morningside…

At Morningside, our ethos is built on core beliefs that guide how we work together as a school community:

  • Respect for the rights of all – everyone in our community is valued and treated with dignity
  • A sense of security and belonging – children and adults feel safe, supported and part of our school family
  • Responsibility for self and others – we take ownership of our actions and look out for each other
  • Innovative teaching and learning – we embrace creativity, curiosity and new approaches to learning
  • Open and regular communication – we work in partnership with families and keep dialogue flowing
  • Willingness to share – we collaborate, learn from each other and celebrate collective success
  • Celebration of success – we recognise effort, progress and achievement in all its forms

Living Our Values Every Day

Our vision, values and ethos aren’t just words on a page – they’re lived out every day at Morningside.

An Inclusive and Nurturing Community

As a Nurturing School, we understand that children learn best when they feel safe, valued and emotionally supported. Our approach ensures that:

  • Every child’s individual needs are understood and met
  • Children develop emotional literacy and resilience
  • Relationships are at the heart of everything we do
  • All children, whatever their starting point, can thrive

We celebrate the diversity of our school community and ensure that every child sees themselves reflected in our curriculum, our resources and our expectations. Inclusion isn’t an add-on at Morningside – it’s woven into everything we do.

A Rich and Inspiring Curriculum

Our curriculum is carefully designed to:

  • Reflect the diversity and richness of global society – celebrating different cultures, perspectives and experiences
  • Build powerful knowledge that takes children beyond their everyday experiences
  • Develop cultural capital – providing experiences that open doors and empower children to succeed
  • Inspire children to be advocates for change and architects of their own futures

We teach discrete subjects, ensuring that children develop deep knowledge and skills in every area of learning. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children build on their learning year on year, from EYFS through to Year 6.

Through partnerships with organisations like the Akram Khan Company, Hackney Empire, Bow Arts, the Ogden Trust, Hackney Music Service, UCL and many more, we bring expert knowledge and real-world experiences into our classrooms. These partnerships enrich our curriculum and provide children with opportunities they might not otherwise have.

Play and Independence

As an OPaL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Platinum school, we recognise that play is essential for children’s development, wellbeing and learning. Our approach to play:

  • Gives children freedom to choose, create and explore
  • Develops independence, resilience and social skills
  • Supports emotional regulation and physical development
  • Creates a joyful school experience where children love coming to school

Our play time and lunchtime staff are trained to support children’s play, and there is a wide range of activities for children to enjoy. Play isn’t a break from learning at Morningside – it’s a vital part of it.

High Expectations for All

We believe that every child can achieve and aspire, whatever their starting point. Our expectations are:

  • Ambitious – we challenge children to reach their full potential
  • Inclusive – we adapt our approach to meet individual needs
  • Consistent – children know what is expected and feel secure
  • Supportive – we provide the scaffolding children need to succeed

We never limit what a child can achieve based on their background, their starting point, or any barriers they may face. Instead, we work tirelessly to remove those barriers and provide the support every child needs to thrive.

In Our Daily Practice

You’ll see our vision, values and ethos in action:

  • In our assemblies – where we explore our weekly value and discuss real-world issues through Picture News, with every assembly explicitly linked to British Values
  • In our classrooms – where children are engaged, curious and supported to take risks in their learning
  • In our play times – where children develop independence, creativity and friendships through our OPaL Platinum approach
  • In our relationships – where adults and children treat each other with kindness, respect and understanding
  • In our celebrations – where we recognise effort, progress and achievement in all its forms
  • In our partnerships with families – where we work together to support every child’s success
  • In our curriculum – which reflects diversity, builds cultural capital and inspires children through partnerships with world-class organisations
  • In our nurturing approach – where every child’s emotional wellbeing is prioritised and supported

This is what it means to be a Morningside child: nurtured, included, inspired and empowered to achieve.
