The learning of an additional language will help the children to be successful in their professional future and feel part of wider society. At this stage, our objective is to build children’s curiosity and to develop their passion for Spanish. We provide the children with engaging and fun activities to develop their linguistics skills and build on their enthusiasm and engagement. This begins in EYFS with informal lessons and educational games all the way to KS2, where the pupils will start to demonstrate an understanding of basic grammar and listening skills.
NUESTRA PÁGINA DE ESPAÑOL (OUR SPANISH PAGE)
Why do we teach Spanish?
Learning a foreign language is an essential part of being a member of a multi-cultural society. At Morningside Primary School, we teach Spanish to all children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6). Learning Spanish opens doors to new cultures, broadens horizons and develops children’s understanding of the world beyond their own experiences.
Studying a foreign language helps children to:
- Develop their communication skills
- Build confidence in speaking and listening
- Appreciate cultural diversity
- Make connections between languages, including English
- Prepare for future language learning at secondary school and beyond
Our Approach
We use Language Angels to deliver our Spanish curriculum. Language Angels provides a carefully sequenced, progressive curriculum that ensures children build their knowledge and skills year on year.
Lessons are engaging, interactive and fun. Children learn through songs, games, role-play and practical activities that bring the language to life. They develop skills in:
- Listening – understanding spoken Spanish
- Speaking – communicating in Spanish with increasing confidence
- Reading – recognising and understanding written Spanish
- Writing – expressing ideas in written Spanish
What do children learn?
Our Spanish curriculum is carefully planned so that children progressively develop their language skills from Year 3 through to Year 6.
Children begin by learning:
- Greetings and introductions
- Numbers, colours and days of the week
- Simple vocabulary about themselves, their families and their interests
As they progress through Key Stage 2, children learn to:
- Hold simple conversations
- Describe people, places and things
- Express opinions and preferences
- Understand and respond to longer spoken passages
- Read and write more complex sentences and short texts
Cultural Learning
Learning Spanish is not just about the language – it’s also about understanding the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries around the world. Children learn about traditions, festivals, food, music and daily life in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, helping them to develop as global citizens.
Spanish Beyond the Classroom
We celebrate languages throughout our school. Children have opportunities to share their Spanish learning in assemblies, perform songs and role-plays, and celebrate their achievements. We recognise and value the many languages spoken by our school community, and learning Spanish helps children to appreciate the richness of linguistic diversity.
